This British band has produced several likeable album particular LAID where alternative rocks fans pleading someone to “SAY SOMETHING.”  If you are familiar with that song, you knew that James is a band that some would find too pop for alternative rock and quite new wave for hard core rock fans.  This could be attributed to the fact that the band is quite versatile when it comes to creativity.  JAMES has the knack to create songs with good melodies, hooks, and lyrics.

More than 16 years as an alternative band, this album has proven once again that JAMES is indeed more than an alternative rock band.  If you have been listening to this band over the years, you will be surprised that this band managed to produce songs that can still appeal to different types of musical genres.  The songs in this album are wide in terms of genre, deep in terms of sounds and lyrics, and broad in terms of appeal.

For example, listeners might expect a syrupy ballad in “Dear John” but what you have in here is an uptempo song that is so 80’s. In “Girl At The End of The World” you have a song that merge the style of Beck and the vocal quality of David Gray.  In “Surfer Song,” you have something that is similar in style with Suede and Savage Garden.  The thumping bass sound on the other hand will remind you of Madonna’s “Ray of Light.” Tracks like “Catapult” and “Move Down South” has the band explore EDM and 80’s pop it is like part Chemical Brothers and part Morrissey.  “Bitch” is a song that U2 might want to perform should Bono decide to dance. To my surprise is like “Communication” of OMD.

As a whole listening to this album, is like listening to a greatest hits album or the best of James.  There is not one song here that you can label as fillers.  Each song is quite different from each other musically and lyrically.  Thus, there is that situation that you listen to the whole album effortlessly. This is indeed delightful and amazing album considering that most existing alternative rock bands barely manage to create new sounds and still limit to music and vibe they were known with.
