There are plenty of superlatives that you can say about this nth album of Barbra Streisand.  And there is no need to do a track by track review in order to justify why you have to own this album.  It is lame to say that this is a good album.  In fact, this is an album that hopefully introduces young listeners to good music.

The album started powerfully with an emotionally charged song “At The Ballet” which is a song from “A Chorus Line.”  Listeners will not only be caught surprise with the emotion told in a song but can really relate on the problems the three characters sang about.

You do not need to feature rap singers in order to be contemporary.  Barbra proved that Hollywood stars who can sing are more than enough to generate interest on this Broadway collection.  Thus, you have Anne Hathaway here at the first song.  You could say that Hugh Jackman is not all claws and talon but he has good pipes as well to match Barbra’s perfect enunciation of the song lyrics in “Any Moment Now.” You will be astonished with the way Jamie Foxx delivers his part with passion in “Climb Every Mountain.”  You will now have proof that Antonio Banderas can really sing and it was no fluke in the movie “Evita.”

Covering Broadway songs doesn’t have to be boring.  Barbra just always proved that you just need to pour the right emotion and she did it to the point of being infectious as evidenced by the excellent rapport with the singers and actors she sang with in this album.

It was an excellent idea for this album to put some dialogues in some parts of the song as it made these traditional or pop standards more engaging and charming.  It is through these dialogues that the song becomes more than delightful and does not beg but urge listeners to listen to the album all over again.

With that, I rate this record 4.0 stars for being more than a Broadway album. Indeed, this is one record that you should buy and own.

1 stars = Ignore it

2 stars = risk it

3 stars = borrow or buy it

4 stars = buy it and keep it
