ARTIST               :        MEGHAN TRAINOR

GENRE                :        POP

DATE RELEASED:        2016

If the first song is an indication that Meghan Trainor would like to steer away from the do woop sound that dominated her previous number album, it is time to scrutinize this 2016 album hers if find out if she succeeded on creating a mature impression (musically) in this album. The first track “Watch Me Do” is a track that will blow away her fans and music critics as this is the kind of song that Beyonce would love to perform.  It is a perfect blend of pop and R and B with empowerment anthem at that

However, the song “Me Too,” she dabbled into an area where Britney Spears was very successful in the song “Scream and Shout.”  The comparison is inevitable as Trainor’s track sounds like Spears’ track.

The reason Meghan failed is that she does not possess the sultriness that Britney has thus this truck ended up quite a failure.  There is also an attempt from her to be Rihanna like with “No” and “Woman Up” (which in some parts sounds like “Pon de Replay.” Even the vocalization was quite similar and the musical arrangement reminds me of songs in “Ant” album of the songstress from Barbados.

Then, she succumbed to featuring rap artists thus “Better” sounded like any radio track that you hear on top of feels like listening to a Justin Bieber track “Sorry.” The acoustic ballad “Hopeless Romantic” is quite good and is a good sountrack for personal romantic moments.  On the other hand, the other acoustic ballad Just Another Friend To You,” is like “I’m Yours”  of Jason Mraz.

Of course, she has to go back to her roots and deliver “I Love Me.”  It is a catchy tune that will make you go back in time where big band music rules the airwave.  Another back to her roots track “Dance Yo Like Daddy” is like a filler songs and has familiar melodies and hooks of Tone Loc “Funky Cold Medina.” Another do woop track “Mom” is a sweet and charming track which is just not mushy because of the bouncy melody.

This is another hodgepodge album where producers decided to showcase Meghan’s ability to deliver pop songs, dancehall and reggaton tracks, R and B, and drama filled acoustic ballads.  Yes, some worked and others don’t. As a whole, this album is quite forced and produced just to capitalize on the success of her first major studio album “Title.”  Thus, I rate this record 2.5 stars out of 5 stars.
