Compilation albums come in many different description like “the best of, essentials, collections, anthology, the greatest hits,” and among others.  However, very often the description do not fit the whole collection. For example, some artists would put out a “greatest hits collection” and fans would be disappointed as some hits were omitted.  Thus, it would be interesting to dissect this collection latest comeback album and collection from Billy Ocean.

This  is a two CD collection where the first CD is a compilation of old hits ranging from the Motown era up to the 70’s.  The second CD consists of his own collection ranging from his Billboard top 10 hits and his own supposed best tracks he recorded.  There is no question that Billy Ocean has one of the best voices ever even though that his vocal timbre is quite similar with that of Barry White.  Credit to this artist, he never exploited the similarity by including a song or two from Mr. White.

The first CD is a good collection of old hits and standard staples.  The best thing about his output is that he just created his own cover version and remain true to form with the original version.  As a result, you have a CD collection that is not disjointed.  It is also a good thing that Billy Ocean chose to record songs that fits his vocal ability that you do not hear him gasping for breath or doing a falsetto just to reach high notes.  He retained the original charm of the songs and at the same time stamp his own brand of vocal performance.  Yes, you can forget the original singers and instead drowned yourself in the romanticism that he wants to exude from this collection of old and standard pop songs.
The second CD has all his Billboard hits like “Carribean Queen, Love is Forever, There’ll Be Sad Songs” and many others.  He also included other songs which did not chart well in Billboard charts but deemed to be worthy to be included in this collection such his pre –fame songs like “Love on Delivery, Love Hurts Without You, and Red Light Spells Danger.”

This is a good collection but then again, the term “best of” is quite a misnomer as this album showcased his ability to deliver songs with the right emotion.  This album perhaps was produced to remind people of just how good his vocal ability is and his penchant to sing songs from the heart.  I rate this record 4 stars out of 5 stars.
