This album was released in 2013 and from thereon, there had been lots of similar albums produced by current pop stars, senior pop stars, and crossover artist.  One thing that you will notice in this album is that it is so unlike with other album churned out by Michael Buble and the like as James Torme has both a boyish and manly voice where old and standard songs sounded like contemporary pop music in this record.

In other words, he drowned himself on the songs instead of the songs drowning on him.  In the first place, when an artist compiled standard hits or older tracks, it is about the songs not about himself trying to impress fans.  This is the problem with some pop artists compiling some great songbook, they ignore putting the passion the music wants to convey.  They are more focus on technique and style instead on the sincerity of the performance.

Another likeability factor in this album is that his boyish voice uplifted the song from boring stuff into pleasureable song.  In fact, when you listen to the whole album, you are not satisfying a guilty pleasure but you are expanding your musical horizon in terms of music appreciation.  For example, you will find James Torme interpretation of “Let’s Stay Together” very pleasant to listen as he merged the Motown sound with his own distinct jazzy interpretation.  His “Rock With You” version did not really depart from the original version but still you can say that his cover version is just what a cover version is supposed to be; within the realms of the original sound and infuse with a little of bit of personal branding.

As a whole, the whole album is good and personally I say that James Torme just set the bar on what a compilation album of “great songbook” should be; not too stylish, not boring stuff, mix of familiar and not so familiar songs, vocal sincerity, and passion. He just tamed jazz genre and made it pleasant for some listeners to indulge in songs like “What Are You Doing With The Rest Of,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “Reminiscing in Tempo.” With that, I rate this record 4 stars out of 5 stars.
