If you are looking for an album that will make you relax the whole day as you play all the songs over and over again, you just have to listen to this record.  Gabrielle Aplin is amazing in this record that despite some songs have trite and cliché themes and lyrics she was able to manage to rise above of it all.  Her voice is like a balming cream ready to soothen your skin and keep it cool.  You might think that based on this description this is another new age music album.

Luckily it is not but some songs bear characteristics of Enya sound especially the voice.  But there are songs that she is like Sinead O’ Connor during her “Mandinka” days.  She is like Florence Welch singing “You Don’t Like Dancing” or Taylor Swift going back to her country roots.  The title track “Light Up” is one song that you can compare with “32 Flavors” by Alana Davis.  Her vocal performance borders on sincerity (listen to “Slip Away” and you can really feel her plea not to slip away) and fun (that she can also perform “Footloose” type of song with “Sweet Nothing.”

Here’s a Gabrielle Aplin live performance of “Light Up.”

Indeed, this is an album where versatility is showcased.  With that I rate this record 4 stars out of 5 stars.

Ratings Description:

1 star = Ignore it

2 stars= risk it

3 stars = borrow or buy it

4 stars = buy it and keep it

5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
