It has been a long time since we heard a new record from Paul Young; 19 years to be exact.  This British singer who gave us hits like “Everytime You Go Away,” “Oh Girl,” and “Come Back and Stay.”  Now, if you are looking for songs along the likes of his hits songs, you might probably end up being disappointed as this is a collection of old songs particularly in the Memphis Soul genre.  Thus, you will feel like the songs are quite familiar to if you are not so exposed with songs in this genre; or you feel like being transported to another era while listening to all the tracks in this new album from Paul Young

In this record, you feel like listening to a Paul Carrack record, with a little bit of James Taylor, with some Motown vibe, and imprints of Elvis Presley.  Probably, you might interpret this record as his acting his own age album and going back to his roots or musical influences.

Musically, there is a tendency for Paul Young to perform like black artist in some of the songs in here and fortunately he was probably conscious with this tendency and did not totally exploit the “soul vibe” of many of the songs.  Instead, what he did was play the song like a veteran performer would and rely on his own musical style.  Thus, you won’t hear soaring vocals or scatting, and you will listen to pure and unadulterated version of old ditties.

It might not end up as one of the best albums of all time, but his efforts in gathering songs like “Ain’t The Love Enough,” “Touch A Hand,Make A Friend,” “Big Bird,” Your Good Thing (Is About To End),” and “Words.”  Overall, Paul Young delivers the goods and sang all the tracks with soul perfection.

It is indeed worth the wait and I rate this record 4 stars out of 5 stars.

Ratings Description:
