Future Islands is an American synth band who became an internet sensation when they appeared on The David Lettermen Show in 2014.  One of their singles “Seasons (Waiting On You) was declared by music critics from Pitchfork, NME, and Consequence of Sound as one of the best singles of the year.  If you are looking for something new and something old at the same time with good hooks, melodies, and lyrics, this album should not escape your attention.

SINGLES is their fourth album which was released by 4AD Records.  One thing that you would notice is that the sound of this band is very raw.  They sounded like any college bands recording their tracks at their own garage.  However, the rawness of the whole album gives element of freshness when it comes to sounds. It is like listening to eighties band again when Depeche Mode were dependent on good musical structure, when New Order wasn’t too pop yet with their Regret single, and when synthpop rule the airwaves.

The good thing about this album is that the sounds is not too dated it will just make you reminisce of the good old eighties days and enjoy the similarities of some of the tracks with 80’s songs like “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division “Rio” from Duran Duran, and “Lose Your Love” by Blancmange.

With that I urge everyone out there who are still hook on 80’s groove to find time to listen to this album.  I rate this record 4 stars out of 5 stars.
