Birdy is act or performer that needs huge push in order to be accepted by mainstream listeners. This is the problem when an artist pushes his or her art instead of catering to the musical pleasures of the common people. Probably she recognized this weakness and she attempted to deliver an album with more commercial appeal. The first strain of the first song indicated this purpose as you can hear familiar sounds of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” and even the structure of the music is quite similar.

You can say that the trajectory towards commercialism becomes evident in the second song “Shadow” where the drum program is quite similar with Bruno Mars’ “Grenade.” In the third song, “Keeping Your Head Up,” she tried to go back to her roots and deliver an awesome song which could be likened with Madonna’s “Frozen” in terms of capturing listeners attention. The whole structure of the song will grip listeners to their couch and listen the song over and over again.

It is in songs like “Deep End” that she is sensational. It is in this kind of songs, very personal that she thug the hearts of listeners instead of trying to deliver very radio friendly songs. It is a good thing that she continued to deliver the same kind of songs with “Lost It All.” And by the time you reach “Lifted” you can say that the heir to Kate Bush’s throne is already borne.

The similarity in terms of musical style with Ms Bush becomes more evident the moment you hear “Take My Heart.” In “Hear You Calling,” you can actually imagine Kate Bush singing this song as it sounds like one of her songs during the eighties. Just she like Kate Bush, she is indeed haunting in many of the songs in this album.
In this album, Birdy proves that art and commerce can go together. This is another wonderful album from and definitely better than her earlier efforts. I rate this record 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.
1 star = Ignore it
2 stars= risk it
3 stars = borrow or buy it
4 stars = buy it and keep it
5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
