It is no longer unusual for artist to put an intro song in their album in fact some of them even included intermissions in between songs just like what Janet Jackson did with Rhythm Nation.  However, it is sometimes quite a wonder when artists releases a debut album to start it with a soft ballad. It is even more surprising when that first album is composed mainly of jazzy and dreamy songs.

This is the overall feel of Zayn Malik first foray into album and there are indeed many surprises that will caught the listeners attention.  First, it took song number for him to deliver a fast beat with “Befour.”  Initially, you might think that this song is an attempt to deliver a Justin Timberlike mood but then after finishingthe whole song you would say that Malik has a style of his own.  One word to describe his style is probably exotic because he infused the album with Middle East vibe or instruments in some parts of some songs, making it a totally unique experience for the listeners.

By the time you finished that whole album, you could say that this is what Arabian or Middle Eastern music would sound like given the right production and polishing.  Indeed, it is a good thing that Zayn did not abandon his roots and instead exploited to create a sound that one truly say that it is his own brand of music.   In this album, he and the music producers were able to fuse together different kinds of musical genres but primarily the whole album is structured as an R and B album.  Because he has a good vocal timbre, the whole R and B thing is a huge success as he is able to deliver the right emotion to every song performed in this album.

The vocal quality is very important as this album is quite very personal in terms of themes but stayed away from being too autobiographical.  In this album, he songs deal about falling in and out of love and some sexual provocation and innuendos.  The best song in this track unfortunately is not the ones he wrote but his cover version of The Beatles “Fool For You.”  He gave the song a more personal approach and you would really feel that he was indeed a fool falling for someone. The whole album is cohesive because it was probably structured to show a different kind of soloist. Here Malik is able to show the talent that was not exploited during his One Direction days.Watch

I rate this record 4 stars out of 5 stars.  This album will give Justin Bieber’s Purpose a competition musically if not commercially.
