It’s a good thing that this latest record from CeeLo Green has an intro song as it conditions the mind of the listener as to what to expect in this record.  The intro song “Heartblance Intro” suggests that this is another Motown tribute album.  It comes as no brainer considering that his vocal quality reminds you of the voices of Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, and Jackie Wilson.  However, once you listen to the whole  album, you will have mixed feelings about the Motown groove as many of the songs are quite confusing.

For example, “Tonight” might have Motown vibe but after listening to the whole song, images of Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, and other disco divas comes into your mind.  In the same manner that “Working Class Heroes” confuses listeners because of the dated atmosphere of the record.  You can tell that it might be a rework of David Naughton’s “Making It.” Another thing that is very glaring negatively in this record is that the vocal performance is not quite sincere.  This is evident in the song “CeeLo Sings The Blues” where you got to hear a very tired performance.  It just lack the emotion considering that he has the vocal quality to deliver a very emphatic and emotional song but he did otherwise.

The saving grace of this album is that some tracks have very good lyrics like “Robin Williams,” Est 1980,” and “Sign of The Times.” It is not a bad album though if you just treat the record as a guilty pleasure.  Thus, this record still deserves a 3 stars rating.

Ratings Description:

2 stars= risk it

3 stars = borrow or buy it

4 stars = buy it and keep it
