In this latest record from one of the biggest boy bands ever to grace the planet, it seems that the boys are trying to transform themselves from boys to men.  The sound in this album is more like an echo from 5 Seconds of Summer in most of the tracks in here.  However, the result is that you are listening to a directionless album.  In terms of musicality, there are hints that the boys wanted to go rock thus “Drag Me Down” sounded more like a Sting track instead of pure rock song the lyrics gave away that One Direction wanted to go rock.

They have bass and guitar laden song in “Perfect” but somehow it was the lead vocals that prevented the song from being pure pop track.  The bass and guitar riff in the song are okay.  Because there is no direction in this record, “Infinity” sounded like an old Boyzone song, “What A Feeling” though a very tender song became an old eighties track in terms of sound and vibe.  In fact in some parts, there are hints of Hall and Oates in this track.

The first song “Hey Angel” could have been a good intro song in their transformation from pop to rock or alternative rock as the song is like it was performed by OASIS or Noel Gallagher going solo.  However, One Direction is not too keen to exploit the opportunity.  This album could have become a fitting finale album for them before they split and go on their own individual ways.  The album ended with a melancholic track and it seems that goodbye is not on the horizon.  So, fans might be in for another album soon.

It is good to have a diversity in terms of music but too much of it will create the feeling that this record is just another run of the mill efforts from One Direction. I rate this record 3 stars out of 5 stars.
