In the first song “Dumb,” there is a rap that says “I say that you know I know I ain’t right.”  Considering the title, it gives the impression that this album is clueless in terms of musical direction.  The song is quite theatrical in terms of musical arrangement and instrumentation. In the second song ”Mascara”, there is hint that this is just another singer copying the template Beyonce has already mastered. However, her performance is more akin with Toni Braxton during her first album.

In the third song, “Brand New,” there is an attempt to do that big band thing. You can say it is considering the musical intro where it has 40’s and 50’s feel.  However, there was a big return to reality as the style shifted back to hip hop.  In the next song “Silver Lining,” you listen to what could be an Alicia Keys song.  There is an exciting element in “Hoodlove.” You have tribal like song delivered Rihanna like as a result you have a song destined to be dancehall classic.  With “Let It Burn,” the mood shifted back to Toni Braxton like performance thus she presented another reality that she can be sultry when she wants to.

“Veins” is quite forced in this album, it seems that it doesn’t belong here.  Fortunately, Jazmine recovered in the song “Stupid Girl.”  It is like listening to a Motown song complete with modern beat and vibe; think of Amy Winehouse.  In”Stanley,” she showed that she can be a dance diva as well.  This song combines 70’sretro with 90’s house music.  It is a fresh approach on a topic about being ignored by a man despite doing everything; no screaming ballad in here but a sway approach to deal with disappointment and giving an ultimatum.

She closes the album with a big bang with “If You Dare.” Indeed, the reality is that Jazmine Sullivan delivers a more than satisfactory album. I rate this record with 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.

Ratings Description:
