ALBUM REVIEW               :           EVERYTHING IS 4

ARTIST                                  :           JASON DERULO

GENRE                                  :           POP / R AND B

DATE RELEASED               :           2015

For somebody who is known to be vocally dependent with autotune, it is very brave for Jason Derulo to do away with it and let his natural voice play around this time. This record is pure pop bliss and it has different servings for different pop listening pleasure.  You cannot say that most of the songs in this record are generic pop as the Jason Derulo imprint is still very obvious in this record; feels like he is trying to assume the throne Michael Jackson left behind.

However, the intent was not realize as what you hear are songs that you might have heard before and given a different treatment.  For example, “Want To Want Me” sounds like a Sam Smith song and even the vocals are quite similar.  In “Cheyenne,” you feel like you are listening to a One Direction song.  “Get Ugly” has the same weird feel that you hear in the Queen of Pop’s “Bitch! I’m Madonna.”

“Pull Up” feels like a 90’s dance song.  In “Love Like That,” Jason Derulo tried to go Hip Hop somehow it is hard to swallow him singing songs peppered with the word “nigger.”  His duet with Jennifer Lopez in “Try Me” did not work so well.  However, the song has catchy beat, only problem is Jennifer Lopez is just too predictable as a singer and performer.

Over-all assessment, the whole album is just pure pop delight. If you are looking for serious pop music, you better find it with other performers who are known deliver art like pop music like U2, Bjork, Madonna, Beck, Paul Carrack for example. I rate this record 3 stars out of 5 stars.
