ALBUM REVIEW               :           RETROGLIDE

ARTIST                                  :           LEVEL 42

GENRE                                  :           POP

DATE RELEASED               :           2006

The biggest problem in this record is that most of the songs in here sounded the same and you can hardly tell any differences except when you listen closely to the instruments that are played predominantly in the background.  It seems that this band finally lost its magic in crafting songs like “Running In The Family, Children Say, Something About You, and Praying To A New God.”

The whole album is quite a mess as it does not have a clear musical direction if the band wanted to reinvent its musical style.  Most of the songs have good intro and after few verses, the messes show up and you end up flustered trying to recover your senses as there is an abrupt shift of mood along the way.  One of the characteristics of their early hits is that Level 42 has the ability to prepare listeners for a shift in refrain or in chorus portion of their songs.  Thus, you have a linear progression when it comes to mood setting which is not found in all of the songs in this record.

The only pleasureable song in this record is “Just For You.” For some loyal fans, they can tolerate the mediocrity in most of the songs in here but I say, stay away from this record. I rate this record 1 star out of 5 stars.

Ratings Description:

1 star = Ignore it

2 stars= risk it

3 stars = borrow or buy it

4 stars = buy it and keep it

5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
