ALBUM REVIEW : CHAOS AND CALM
ARTIST : JAMES BAY
GENRE : ROCK / FOLK
DATE OF RELEASED : 2015
If you want retro rock without the obvious dated sound of any 70’s rock are known, then you should listen to this new album from James Bay. This album has a vibe that you find in old school rock and at the same time very modern in terms of musical arrangements. Instead of the guitar wailing, it is the voice of James Bay that will help you describe the emotion that the song wants to convey to listeners.
The first song in the album “Craving” has a Lenny Kravitz vibe similar to drum program with “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” By the time you finished the second song “Hold Back The River,” you have an idea that James Bay will definitely give Paolo Nutini a run for his money. They have similar musical styles and even their vocals sound alike. The chord structure of “Let It Go” will make it for DJ’s easier for them to mash up this song with that of The Beatles song “In My Life.”
Most of the songs in this record like “If Ever You Want To Be In Love” can be associated with troubadours of long ago. Some songs like “Best Fake Smile” is like imagining Bob Dylan doing some fun songs. “When We Were On Fire” has a Paul Carrack vibe and danceable at the same time. Thus, expect that you might here an EDM version of this song later on. “Move Together” is like an old Chris Isaak tune before he did some TV and Movie screen performances. Listening to “Scars” is like hearing soundtrack from Twin Peaks.
In “Collide,” you might be confused as to kind of music that you will hear. The guitar background is arranged as if it is a song by Little Richard and the vocals bear some similarity with that of Kenny Loggins. And this brings to overall conclusion of the musicality of James Bay. He fills in the void that Kenny Loggins leave behind. Thus, you will hear some of his future music in the movies.
This record might not be fresh in terms of musicality, however, in terms of production, lyrics, and vibe and sound, this is a far superior album than most records currently churned out. I rate this record 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.
1 star = Ignore it
2 stars= risk it
3 stars = borrow or buy it
4 stars = buy it and keep it
5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
