Album Review : REFLECTION

Artist                                     :               FIFTH HARMONY

Genre                                   :               POP

Date of Released             :               2015

It has been a long time that there has been a formidable girl group in the music industry.  A lot of girl groups have attempted but none made significant marks like The Supremes, The Go Go’s, Destiny’s Child, Spice Girls, and among others.  Fifth Harmony is a current girl group who wants to achieve what those girl groups had achieved.  Let us take a look if they have all the cards to do it.

Sledgehammer showcased the group’s vocal dexterity and harmony.  It means that the girls know how to blend their voices well thus it is not irritating to your ears when listen to their songs.  “Worth It” proves that they cannot be outshine with a featured singer and that the girls can blend in different musical styles.  “Everlasting Love” is an indication that this group have huge musical talent.  “Like Mariah” is an indication that one of them might have the vocal pipes like Mariah Carey, but she is sensible enough not to copy Mimi’s vocal style.

What is quite ironic that they did not include Madonna as one of their musical influences and this is reflected in their song “This Is How We Roll” which is quite similar with Britney Spears’ “Scream and Shout.”  And, we all know that Britney was never shy about admitting Madonna’s influence o her musical artistry thus, it is ironic that they ignored Madonna yet thread the path her copycats did.

“Them Girls Be Like” is another women empowerment songs and if they will stay longer in this business, one is sure that listeners will be hearing a lot of songs similar to this in the future.  By the time you reach the song “Reflection,” you have this feeling that this group did not yet discover their own persona that will make them unique with other girl groups who came in before them.  This song is so very Destiny Child, En Vogue, and a little bit of Pussycat Dolls.

“We Know” showed their weakness which is they technically sing ballads but they lack the passion to make the song endearing to listeners.  Their rendition of this song lacks the kind of emotion the lyrics try to actualize emotionally.  “Body Rock” is a mandatory song for girl groups to do; the kind of music which encourage people to dance.  While they have diva voices, it is just sad they choose to deliver this song like Jennifer Lopez.  “Brave Honest Beautiful” is a song that salutes powerful women who dominated the music industry since.

With all those words for Fifth Harmony, I say that they will definitely leave a mark in the music business provided they can create their own unique persona not just a morphing of different personalities of other girl groups.  I rate this record 2.5 stars out of 5 stars.

1 star = Ignore it

2 stars= risk it

3 stars = borrow or buy it

4 stars = buy it and keep it

5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
