Album Review               :       FIRE WITHIN (Limited Deluxed Edition)

Artist                  :       BIRDY

Genre                 :       ALTERNATIVE ROCK

Date of Released     :               2013

This is her second album and probably some of you out there are already familiar with Birdy, yes the one with a voice that soars high to the sky.  Nope, she does not have the vocal pipes of Mariah Carey but her vocal performance makes you feel that you are flying in the sky.  In this sophomore output of hers, there is danger that listeners will find her boring as her voice reminds you some singers who were once popular before her ascendancy like Jewel, Fiona Apple, the female vocalist of Evanesence, and even Dolores O’ Riordan of The Cranberries.

Another possibility that listeners will find this album is that the musical structure is quite the same.  What sets apart each song individually are the themes the singer is singing with or for.  The album is aptly title “Fire Within” as the first two songs “Wings” and “Heart of Gold” speaks of inside emotion of longing to be free.  The song “Light Me” might be about being grateful about someone but ironically the song is delivered with full of angst.  It is like she wants to be free from certain bondage of being dependent with somebody.

“Words As Weapon” is probably the most hurting song in here and it has a melody and vocal performance that makes a good mash up with “Bring To Life” by Evanesence.  “All You Never Say To Me” may sound like “Apologize” by One Republic, but this is one good song about trying to read somebody’s mind and know how the other one feels about someone.  This is one of the fires within Birdy is trying to say that deep inside she is still doubtful about the feelings someone she is sharing with.  When you listen to “Strange Birds,” you will hear some familiar refrain, this probably due to the fact Sia of “Chandelier” song is one of the writers of this song.

“Maybe” is not difficult to listen to as it reminds you of beautifully structured songs of long ago.  “No Angel” and “All About You” are songs song about “I love you but you love her, but just the same, I will hear you.”  Somehow “Standing In The Way Of Light” has similar demand with “No Angel” and that is about asking someone letting down their own guard.  There is a very personal element with the song “Shine” as it probably speaks of coming out and open up your sexuality.  Thus, she sings like

“Your love is strong,
And they just don’t deserve,
To choose where you belong

The song has similar vague and innuendos about lesbian love or gay love for that matter with the song “Come To My Window” by Melissa Etheridge; just a thought.  However, in the song “The Same”, there seems to be a turnaround about opening up and she sings like

“Purity lost in vain
You think I should be the same”

What is the fire within she is singing in here?  There are lots of interpretations that you can make.  Whatever your meanings are, you will thank Birdy for providing you some jump start to show the same kind of inside emotion and release it to someone.  Nope, this album is not a boring record, it has just too many emotions to convey and it will make you ponder deeply about yourself.  I rate this record 3.5 stars if only for sharing her thoughts very well in this record about letting go of pent up emotions.
