After you have released your first album, you will find working on the next albums very daunting. This is the reason why some singers take a long time to follow up one album to another. Part of the reasons might be, the performer find it difficult to top the success of the previous albums or find it hard to decide the kind of musical directions to take. This is probably the explanation why this latest album from Guy Sebastian has a different approach compared with his last record.
There is a certain confusion that you can observe in this record. For example, the song “Madness” has certain elements of maturity that was not present in his previous album, however, the song “Mama Ain’t Proud” is an attempt from the singer with hip hop like Mariah Carey did; somehow Guy Sebastian was moderately successful. But, what about the rest of the songs in this record?
“Like A Drum” is your usual upbeat song to necessary to fill the album. “Elephant” is a reggae infused song which is quite wonderful as it is not to heavy on the reggae side. “Light and Shade” has rap integration which is quite anthemic thus, some of the lyrics in this song will linger in your mind. In “The Pause,” you can feel the liquid element like the way you noticed with “The Look Of Love” by Madonna. “Animal In Me” sounds alright, a nice song very good to listen over and over again while doing a long drive with your favourite wheels.
There is nothing to be embarrassed in this album considering that there indeed some good songs in this set. I rate this record 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.
1 star = Ignore it
2 stars= risk it
3 stars = borrow or buy it
4 stars = buy it and keep it
5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
