Date of Released : 2014
The first song in this record “Sanctified” will make you sit and listen to the whole song. It is quite unusual if you are looking for another group along the lines of “The Go-Gos” or “The Charlatan.” In this record, The Veronicas opted to experiment with many style. Thus, you have a Prince like song with “Sanctified.” You will find “Did You Miss Me” very fresh as it is both a rock and EDM song. You can hardly imagine Katy Perry singing this song although it can pass up as one of her songs.
The reason of bringing up Katy Perry is that there is a song indeed that can be construed as a one of her songs; “Cruel.” This is quite sad considering that the two ladies were able to sound different with the help of the first two songs. But then again, they are experimenting with musical styles right? So, brace yourself with “Line of Fire” as they go Bjork like in this song; reminds you of “Army of Lover” from the Icelandic singer. In “Teenage Millionaire” you have a song that is similar in treatment with Icona Pop’s “I Love It.”
With a song titled “Born Bob Dylyan,” it is expected that you won’t hear EDM treatment but acoustic guitar dominating the song. Well, it was just in the intro and The Veronicas chose to do it the plugged way. The title sounds promising, however, there are so many things that you can tell about being Bob Dylan and the ladies chose to sing “I wish I was born Bob Dylan and had all the words to speak my feelings.” The song “Always” is an intelligent construction of words of pining for love for someone who does not want to share heart and soul with someone who declares that “my heart is your heart” or “my house is your house.”
The group could have salvaged the album if they only have one Katy Perry like song, instead they opted to go one more with Arianna Grande type of song in “Mad Love.” While it is engaging, it would have been wise if they choose another experimental kind of song. The song “You Ruin Me” is not only a Rihanna sound alike vocally but also “Take A Bow” like in terms of musical treatment and lyrical context. “More Like Me” might be too pop but it proves that The Veronica can belt out a rock song like the Wilson sisters can of HEART group.
The album is an interesting fusion of pop, rock, and EDM. After listening to the whole album, you will find that The Veronicas just want to express in manner they can and have fun at the same time. I rate this album 2.5 stars out 5 stars.
1 star = Ignore it
2 stars= risk it
3 stars = borrow or buy it
4 stars = buy it and keep it
5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
