Artist                                     :               She & Him

Genre                                   :               Traditional Pop

Date of Released             :               2014

One of the problems of making a cover album is that comparisons from the original artist is inevitable.  Thus, some singers will just play it safe by rendering the song in its original form or tweaking some portions of the song by adding “ohhs” and “ahhs” along the way.  Thus, when some artist tried to create an original song as if they own it, it takes a lot of courage and risks; remember Madonna’s version of “American Pie?”  It took some few words from Don Mclean that her version is alright with him in order to silence the critics saying negative things about her version of the over 7 minute song which she cut into just 5 minutes.

In this album by She & Him, they did not explore the song differently.  The good thing about it is that the lead singer Zooey Deschanel has the voice that can give justice to any classic songs.  Thus, listening to the whole album is like a trip to memory lane.  Her voice reminds you of Linda Ronstadt crooning  “I’ve Got A Crush On You” when she sang “Unchained Melody”, “Stars Fell on Alabama”, and “Oh No, Not My Baby.”

While She & Him remains faithful to the original version, you can say that how you wished that they experimented with styles in some songs considering that both female and male lead acts can actually rise above the normal levels; both have skills and talents.  I rate this record 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.

Ratings Description:

1 star = Ignore it

2 stars= risk it

3 stars = borrow or buy it

4 stars = buy it and keep it

5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
