Album Review : MONUMENT TO AN ELEGY

Artist : Smashing Pumpkins
Genre : Rock
Date of Released : 2014

Initially, there is a feeling that this is a throwback album for Smashing Pumpkins. This group hasn’t had a hit since the nineties. Thus, it is quite expected for this band to release an album that sounds like the ones they released during the grunge and alternative rock era. From “Tiberius” to “One and All” you listened to hooks and musical structure that have shades of Foo Fighters and guitar strumming reminiscent of any alternative rock bands famous during the nineties. Then, suddenly you have “Run2me” which is quite a surprise as this is probably the most POP since 1979 (not the year but one of the most famous hits of this band.)

While some of songs if not all, are quite generic in terms of being alternative rock or shades of grunge, many of the songs in this album are quite better when you compared to other rock bands. Smashing Pumpkins is still able to deliver rock songs which are not painful to your ears when you listen to them. The lyrics are still structured in a way that it is not trite for a rock song. Some songs are easy to listen as the title is only pretentious like “Tiberius” and “Dorian” for example but, the meaning of the lyrics of the songs are easy to comprehend.

I rate this album 3 stars out of 5 stars.

Ratings Description:
1 star = Ignore it
2 stars= risk it
3 stars = borrow or buy it
4 stars = buy it and keep it
5 = buy, keep, and treasure it
